Using the research collection
Guidance for finding, searching, reading, and verifying Library material.
Begin with the collection pages when browsing, or use a reader’s Contents and Search controls when working within a book or journal volume.
Books, Journals, Articles & Essays, Theses & Dissertations, Archives, Media provide category-specific choices. Select the available subject, author, title, journal, volume, or speaker, then use View to open the selected work.
All combines the Library’s curated holdings with private titles added on this device. Curated shows the public research collection; Private shows only the user’s local records. Favorites are personal to the user.
In book readers, Phrase searches words together without requiring quotation marks. All Words finds pages containing every entered word in any order. Exact Match finds complete words; turn it off for partial matches, including endings and plurals. Match Case distinguishes capital and lowercase letters. Line-end hyphenated words are included in ordinary search.
Uppercase AND, OR, and NOT retain advanced Boolean searches; fellowship NEAR/10 baptism searches nearby terms. Quoted phrases remain supported. Specialist journal readers retain their existing search controls.
Journal readers may provide separate Contents and Search document tabs. Contents opens the reviewed article map; Search document searches the full available text.
The page box uses the number printed in the book, so you can enter a page from its table of contents. Scan-page numbers and scan totals are hidden. Arrows and thumbnails still move through covers and other unnumbered pages. If a printed number is unavailable, use Correct below the reader to establish the numbering for a continuously numbered book. Repeated page numbers offer a choice of occurrences.
Reader controls are grouped by task, with a hint when you hover over each icon. Available controls may include page entry, previous and next page, thumbnails, Fit page, Fit width, manual zoom from 75% through 1000%, Select and Pan pointer tools, Print, Save copy, and source-specific text or scan views. Choose the arrow to select text normally; the pointer becomes an I-beam over the selectable text layer. Choose the open hand to press and drag an enlarged page horizontally or vertically. In scanned documents, words that the source OCR did not recognize remain part of the page image and cannot be selected.
Select a search result or contents entry to open its supporting page. OCR can contain recognition errors, so verify quotations against the displayed page image before publication.
Choose Straighten page beside the Fit controls to correct a slightly tilted page. Only the current page is analyzed, after you click. If a reliable correction is found, the page and its text and annotations turn together; a small reduction keeps all corners visible. The Reset arrow restores the original angle. Corrections are remembered in this browser for the same document and page, separately from annotation backups. Uncertain pages stay unchanged. Straightening does not repair defective OCR or curved text, and Save copy still downloads the unchanged PDF.
The arrow is the default pointer and becomes an I-beam over selectable text. Double-click a word or drag across a phrase; on release, choose Copy, Note, Highlight, or Underline from the rounded menu. Right-click existing markup for Copy, Define, Color, Note, or Clear. Define opens Merriam-Webster in a separate tab. Note is omitted when a note is already attached; click its note icon to view or edit it. Hover over a note icon to preview its contents, or drag it to reposition it. The note editor saves automatically and closes when focus moves outside it. Clear removes the markup and its attached note; Undo restores the most recently cleared item.
The Notes icon opens a scrollable column on the right listing highlights, underlines, and notes with page numbers. Click an entry to return to its markup; the selected entry has a lightly colored background. Use the small note icon on an entry to add or edit its note. Export and import backups from the bottom of this column. Earlier drawn underlines are preserved, but Copy and Define are unavailable if no text was stored with them. Selected-text underlines join neighboring fragments into a straight line. For defective text layers, right-click the page and choose Draw underline, then drag beneath the text. The stroke stays horizontal and the pointer returns to normal when released. Escape cancels drawing. Drawn lines support Color, Note, and Clear; Copy and Define require selected text. Changes save in this browser; Save copy downloads the unchanged source PDF.
Export backup saves all your notes and highlights as a file. Use Import backup in another browser or device to merge them; newer edits are retained. Export regularly: clearing browser data can remove annotations. Anyone sharing your browser profile can see them. No registration or server synchronization is included. Dates use Eastern Time.
Annotations belong to a specific file revision. Reading PDFs and original scans keep separate annotations. For Restoration Review, switch from Reading text to a PDF view to annotate. Pages without selectable text still support page notes.
Select the heart beside a reader title to save it in Favorites on this device. In selectable PDF text, copying can append a Chicago-style citation without inventing a printed page. Highlight a complete biblical reference, such as Romans 5:5, to open the ESV passage panel.
Search and reading use the proofread issue text. When a verified source pair is attached, Reading PDF and Original scan views appear; printed-page links and citation tools open the supporting scan for verification.
One representative issue is available while the reader is tested with this journal’s unusually wide pages and large scan file. Enlarge the page as needed, choose the open-hand Pan tool, and drag the page horizontally or vertically. Searchable text and thumbnails may appear after Archive.org finishes processing the uploaded issue.
Preservation source, edition, and verification details are supplied when available. These stewardship records remain secondary to ordinary reading and searching.
